Course Preview, Drone Video Tour :: Holes 13-15

14 Green

MGC Members -

Our drone footage video tour continues with the middle part of our back nine, holes 13-15.

Enjoy.

Matt Gibb, Green Committee Chair

Hole 13:

The 13th fairway underwent the usual expansions, bringing the left and right fairway bunkers back into play.

At the green, we retained the steep, banking slope on the left/back side of the green, but slightly softened the overall back to front slope for more usable pin positions.

As most of you know by now, this green provided the most challenge in getting the seed to take hold with the incessant rain last fall.  Jared and team have done a fantastic job helping this one along this spring.  (You may notice some light brown areas on front of 13 green, these are patches of sand/seed.)

Jeff Mingay:  “The bank on the left side of this green actually became a bit steeper in the process of softening its general slope to accommodate bent grass. We gained some interesting new pin positions as a result. But, I also expect to see a few more approach shots go in with that left bank strengthened, directing balls toward the middle of the green!”

Hole 14:

This hole underwent the usual fairway expansions, but the green is significantly expanded.  The green is larger overall, but more so back left and back right.  You'll also notice the fairway now runs right up to the green between the front left/right greenside bunkers, improving playability.

Additionally, with all the trees removed behind the green, there is an "infinity' effect to this green now.

Jeff Mingay:  “This green is one of the best examples illustrating how we’ve expanded the putting surfaces as close to surrounding banks, bunkers and other hazards as possible. We’ve restored a really interesting shape here, along with some peripheral hole locations that will significantly enhance the interest and challenge of this hole.”

Hole 15:

The major change on 15 is the left fairway bunker.  Same as hole 8, this was shifted/turned, so it is more at an angle, less perpendicular to the line of play.  This was done to reduce the narrow fairway pinch point between the right side of the bunker and the right rough, where our turf had really suffered in the past.  The fairway turf between the bunker and right rough is now approx. double the width, improving playability and aesthetics.

Also, similar to the left side of 2, we also removed the depression and surrounding mounds in the right rough where many tee shots end up, to eliminate what’s often referred to as a “double hazard."  In this case, a “double hazard” existed because golfers were forced to attempt to recover from the depression/mounds with trees immediately in front of that hazard. With the depression/mounds eliminated, golfers will have a more reasonable chance to recover from the right rough following a marginal tee shot.

The fairway and green underwent minor expansions.
