Week 16 Recap Now that we’ve had a couple of hard frosts, our focus has turned from routine mowing and fertilizing, to winter preparation and some additional detail oriented tasks that we didn’t have the time for when most our labor was allocated to mowing.  Once the turf receives its first frost, top growth ceases and all of the plant’s energy is then used to push roots and store carbohydrate reserves as it prepares for the winter months.  The photo below is a cross section from last week of 5 green. Notice the root mass is already 6” deep.  The poa annua greens we managed previously were most often in the 2” range.  This is one of the many characteristics that makes bentgrass far superior to poa annua. Another project that’s in progress is squaring off all tees.     Now that the tees have adequately grown in, we’re adjusting the allignment and making sure the perimeters are all square and in straight lines.     This...

Week 15 recap Instead of looking back on the week that was, today’s blog is going to focus on the weekend ahead. This Saturday, October 26 th  between the hours of 12 and 2, we will be pleased to host any members that would like to come down to our maintenance facility and take a limited course walking tour utilizing the several cart paths that intersect between holes 2,5,14 and 12.  You will commence your walking tour on the road that leads to the 6 th  tee from the maintenance lot then splinter off on several options where the paths converge. Jared will meet each of you in the parking lot at the shop and send you on your way then he will be available for any questions you may have when you come off the course.   One will be able to see a lot of the golf course this way including getting good looks at the 5 th , 14 th , 12 th  and 2 nd  greens. It is critical that we do stay on the cart paths and not venture on the turf or gre...

Week 14 Recap New # 2 white tee box view. 244 yards to the right fairway bunker.   Sod to be used in the dirt area shown around the tee Once the grounds dried out enough we were able to continue our growth maintenance program throughout the golf course despite the light snow fall.   All of our energies and resources are devoted to growing grass.  Our conditions last week, like much of this fall, have been less than ideal.  However, our turf has really taken a liking to our soil and along with our tender loving care, is progressing very nicely.  Our tees and fairways are as close to perfect as can be which is attributed to our ability to get them planted in mid August and then properly cared for since. This fall we've utilized one of the world's most recognized cold weather turf and bent grass experts in Dr. Brian Horgan and his partner Sam Bauer as site consultants on an as needed basis.  They were also the site consulta...

Hole 13 from overhead the tee box Week 13 Recap Last week we were able to share with you overhead views of several holes. This week we have updated the presentation to include the entire golf course. We are very excited to share this progress with you.  Despite the less than ideal weather conditions we are making excellent headway.  We are confident that the course will be perfect when we reach the  finish line in 2020. As we have stated previously you will notice some wash out areas.  These are being treated and will not be noticeable at all when you tee it up next year. All of our time right now (except for taking pictures with my drone) are spent mowing and fertilizing as we continue to ensure optimum growing conditions.  Mowing the golf course is critical to enhancing lateral growth of the bent grass which is essential to its maturing. Week 12 recap Since it is week 12 recap here's a great shot of hole 12 looking back from the green. This week we'd like to share with you a preview of several of our holes from a bird's eye perspective. This is about half the course...the rest of the course will be added for a preview this Friday night at the upcoming October Fest! The critical point to keep in mind when reviewing the following photos is that we are in the first quarter of a four quarter game. Meaning that while you will see significant progress, there are still areas on holes not grown in because they are behind from washouts and seed displacement.   All  of this will be addressed this fall and in the spring via sod and or seed.  By opening day those areas will be fully grown in. Please click on this link to preview these photos. Overhead view of MGC
