Course Preview, Drone Video Tour :: Holes 4-6

5th Green

MGC Members -

Our drone footage video preview tour continues below with holes 4-6.  It was great to see the member engagement for holes 1-3 released on Friday 6/5.  We had 658 page views through Monday morning, the most of any re-grass blog post.

Next up is holes 7-9 on June 10, then June 12/15/17 for the remaining.

Enjoy.

Matt Gibb, Green Committee Chair

Hole 4:

Hole 4 is essentially the same two tier green we all remember, but it underwent some very subtle changes which will improve turf conditions.

The front/lower portion was raised slightly so that there is less of a bowl down below to collect water.  This, combined with XGD drainage, will reduce pooling water in summer and winter, improving turf health.

The front left bunker was moved a little to the left and back to provide a wider entry to the green.  The prior version had a narrow entry, and with all the walking traffic/push carts, the turf suffered.  We also converted the area short of the green to fairway, vs. rough, improving playability and aesthetics.

Jeff Mingay: "By shifting the left bunker in that direction, we were able to resolve drainage, traffic and playability issues without affecting the challenge presented to low-handicap golfers who typically fly their tee shots onto the green at the fourth."

Hole 5:

We underwent the usual fairway expansion on this hole, but it is the green that underwent a major change.  The back to front slope of the green is the same, but the green was significantly expanded on the left.  This expansion was done mostly "in the field."  That means that once Jeff Mingay and Jared started stripping the green, they soon realized from the soil profile that the original green extended much further left.  So it was expanded back to its original size.  This green is one of the biggest changes to the course and one of the more exciting...

Jeff Mingay:  Leading up to the re-grassing project, historical research and some in the field digging revealed the original, immense size of the fifth green. Its restoration is one of the most exciting aspects of this project, enhancing the interest, distinctiveness and memorability of one of the best par 4s Ive seen, anywhere.

Hole 6:

This hole is largely unchanged outside of usual fairway and green expansions.  The most noticeable difference is how the new fairway expansion now wraps around the bunker short left of the green.
